Where's the snow?
​
We had our first snow day. It wasn't the biggest storm but there was ice that might have made travel a little dicey. It was good to not take a chance with our kids on the buses. Looking at the weather, we may have a decent size storm this weekend and some possible opportunities for more snow days next week.

It was another great week. There were many great activties taking place and the kids had a wonderful time. Their engagement was high. We will continue to push your children in their learning.

February Students of the Month
​
Each month, teachers nominate a student of the month. This student displays attributes of being kind, setting a good example for others, and is an active participant in their learning. We compile all the nominees and the staff vote on our Outstanding Student of the Month who is honored at an awards' presentation at Town Hall with Dr. Brummett.

We also recognize students in our Kindergarten and Pre K. They are our Shining Stars. These are our youngest students who are learning all about the expectations of Elizabeth Green Elementary School. In their short time with us, they have done a fabulous job completing their work, being classroom leaders, and having an overall outstanding attitude.

Here are our Shining Stars:

Kindergarten - Olivia Bordonaro and Lena Elhaddad

100th Day Celebration!
​
This Monday, February 10th, the Student Council is sponsoring "Dress Like You Are 100 Years Old". Celebrate the 100th day in style. Let's see what everyone will wear!

Valentine's Day
​
The Valentine’s Day holiday is quickly approaching. Classrooms may celebrate in a variety of ways. Students are permitted to bring in cards; however, they can not distribute any edible items such as candy. All edible items will be sent back home with your child. Teachers will be in touch with specific details regarding celebrations. They can request items be sent 24 hours in advance to ensure no candy is included. Given that there is no school on February 14, celebrations can occur on or before February 13.

EG is a Title 1 School
​
Our school receives federal funds through the Title I grant. These are supplemental funds, which means they are used to provide additional resources to support identified students in achieving academic success in reading and/or math. Teachers communicate with parents/guardians of students who receive reading or math intervention and share progress throughout the year.  We also collaborate with parents and families and seek feedback to improve services. 

Parents/guardians also have the right to request information about your child’s teachers’ and paraprofessionals’ professional qualifications. All teachers at our school have been certified by the state of Connecticut as highly qualified. In addition, all staff members continue learning through professional development activities and are evaluated each year to make sure their teaching skills remain at the highest possible level. Furthermore, we will provide timely notice if a student has been assigned or has been taught for four or more consecutive weeks by a teacher who does not meet applicable State certification or licensure requirements.

Lost and Found

Please take a look and see if anything in the Lost and Found belongs to your student. The Lost and Found rack is located in the cafeteria and can be accessed by all students during their lunch wave. If you have any questions please email bfigueiredo@npsct.org.

Cafeteria Information
​
Universal free lunch is no longer available to all students. Families are encouraged to complete an application to determine eligibility for Free and/or Reduced Lunch. Applications can be completed on-line here. Otherwise, the cost for school lunch is $2.90 at the elementary level. Parents/Guardians may apply funds to your child’s account either online or by sending a check/cash. Checks should be made out to Newington School Cafeterias. For more information on how to add money to your child’s account, please see here.

Breakfast is available for $2 per day also.

Classroom Snacks/Celebrations
​
All classrooms are peanut/tree nut free. A snack containing peanut/tree nut may not be eaten in the classroom. At lunch, the cafeteria has designated tables for students with peanut/tree nut allergies. Parents of children with these allergies may opt to have your child sit at this table/s. Birthdays may be acknowledged with non-food items such as stickers, pencils, or other non-food items. Food is not accepted for birthday celebrations.

There is a lot going on with the PTO! See below for some important updates:

Stickergrams are available for Valentine’s Day. For $20 the PTO will deliver scented stickers or Smickers to your child’s classroom in time for their Valentine’s celebration. Each Smicker two pack will include a tag “From” tag with your child’s name. Why spend all of the time filling out valentine cards when the PTO can do it for you? Order forms come home in backpacks or email Mary at egreenpto@gmail.com to order. 

Thank you to Tutoring You to Excellence Virtual Tutoring for sponsoring our 100th Day treat for all of our students. We are so proud of how far they've all come this year.

The positions of president, vice president, treasurer, and secretary are open for the 2025-2026 school year. Some veteran committee members will be running but we are in particular need of someone interested in being secretary and co-treasurer. Please see the position descriptions here and email Mary at egreenpto@gmail.com or Mr. Doran with questions. Nominations will be in March with the election in April. 

- Family night at the Wolfpack, Friday, February 21 at 7 PM at the XL center in Hartford. Tickets need to be purchased by Tuesday, February 4 to get the discount. $20 per ticket.

PTO Birthday Grams
​
The PTO is here to help make birthday celebrations in the classroom even easier. We will make and deliver birthday grams for the entire class on behalf of the birthday child. Please see this link for more information.

Got Lunch Pajama Day
​
On Friday, February 21, Got Lunch Newington is sponsoring a Pajama Day district wide. Got Lunch Newington is a local non-profit that buys, packages, and delivers lunch groceries to Newington children every week during the summer. This helps to fill the summer void when there's no free breakfast and lunch offered through the schools. Got Lunch relies 100% on donations from the community. It costs roughly $150 to feed a child for the summer and we usually feed between 150 and 200 children each summer. Every little bit helps towards feeding children in your own neighborhoods. We appreciate your support! 

Let's all dress up in our PJs and see how much money we can raise for this great cause.

4th Grade - Got Lunch Pajama Day
​
The 4th grade will be visiting the Bushnell on February 21. PJs would not be appropriate clothing for this trip. The 4th grade will have their PJ day on Thursday, February 20. The $1 donation is still recommended.
